Installing a Modern Medical Waste Incinerator at Abakpa Health Centre

A medical waste incinerator is being installed at Abakpa Health Centre to strengthen healthcare waste management in Enugu East Local Government Area. The project addresses infrastructure gaps that create risks around the handling and disposal of hazardous healthcare waste.

South Saharan Social Development Organisation (SSDO) is implementing the project through the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP). The initiative aims to improve medical waste disposal infrastructure and support safer healthcare environments across the LGA.

Medical Waste Incinerator Installation in Enugu East

The incinerator has been delivered to Abakpa Health Centre, and installation works are underway. These works include the electrical connections and other technical components required to make the system operational.

Once installation is complete, the facility will provide a dedicated disposal system for medical waste generated by the health centre and other public and private health facilities within Enugu East LGA.

Appropriate disposal infrastructure is essential for managing hazardous healthcare waste. Without it, unsafe handling and disposal can expose health workers, patients, waste handlers, and surrounding communities to avoidable risks.

The new facility is expected to support safer waste handling, strengthen infection prevention practices, and reduce environmental risks associated with inappropriate disposal.

Coordinating Stakeholders to Strengthen Healthcare Infrastructure

The project brings together SSDO, the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria, the Enugu State Ministry of Health, the Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ENSPHCDA), and other relevant stakeholders.

SSDO Executive Director, Dr. Stanley Ilechukwu (MD), is leading the organisation’s involvement in advancing the project.

This collaboration connects development assistance with local health institutions and relevant stakeholders responsible for healthcare delivery and public health infrastructure in Enugu State.

Through this coordinated effort, the project addresses a practical gap in the systems that support safe healthcare delivery at the local level.

Assessing the Equipment Before Delivery

The medical waste incinerator was supplied by Inciner8 Limited, a UK-based manufacturer of waste incineration equipment.

Before the equipment was delivered to Nigeria, SSDO Executive Director Dr. Stanley Ilechukwu visited the company in the United Kingdom to inspect the incinerator and engage with its technical team.

The assessment covered the equipment’s efficiency, safety, logistics, and environmental compliance. This provided an opportunity to review key technical considerations before the equipment was transported to Enugu.

The inspection formed part of the preparation for installing the system at Abakpa Health Centre.

Moving Towards Commissioning

Installation of the medical waste incinerator is progressing, with SSDO working alongside relevant stakeholders towards the facility’s official launch and commissioning.

Once operational, the facility is expected to serve Abakpa Health Centre and other public and private health facilities within Enugu East LGA.

The project represents an investment in healthcare waste management infrastructure, addressing a need that extends beyond individual health facilities.

By supporting the installation of a dedicated disposal system, SSDO is working with government institutions and development partners to strengthen the infrastructure needed for safer healthcare waste management in Enugu State.
