Empowering Future Leaders: #YelloCare2024 Initiative in Enugu State

In a remarkable collaboration, the South Saharan Social Development Organization (SSDO) has partnered with MTN Nigeria and the Post Primary School Management Board to bring the #YelloCare2024 initiative to Enugu State. This initiative, celebrating MTN Nigeria’s 30th anniversary, is a 30-day campaign dedicated to promoting education in rural communities. Under the inspiring theme, “Learn Today, Lead Tomorrow,” the campaign aims to provide essential learning resources to students, fostering a brighter future for young minds.

A Commitment to Education

At SSDO, we believe that education is the cornerstone of progress and development. Our objective is to expand educational opportunities for the burgeoning youthful population. Through initiatives like #YelloCare2024, we strive to empower students with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed.

Reaching Rural Communities

As part of the #YelloCare2024 campaign, our team visited two schools in Enugu State: Community Secondary School, Iji-Nike, and Community Secondary School, Ugwuogo Nike. These schools, located in rural areas, often face challenges in accessing quality educational resources. Our goal was to bridge this gap and inspire students to dream big and aim high.

Engaging Activities and Exciting Prizes

The highlight of our school visits was a quiz competition designed to engage students and test their knowledge in various subjects. The enthusiasm and participation from the students were truly heartwarming. To recognize their efforts and encourage continuous learning, we awarded fantastic prizes to the participants, including:

– 100 backpacks

– Textbooks in English and Mathematics

– Workbooks

– Notebooks

– Mathematical sets

These resources are more than just supplies; they are tools that will help students excel in their studies and develop a love for learning.

Looking Ahead

As we continue our journey, we remain committed to our mission of improving the quality of education in Enugu State and beyond. We are grateful to MTN Nigeria and the Post Primary School Management Board for their invaluable partnership in this initiative. Together, we can make a lasting impact and empower students to become the leaders of tomorrow.

At SSDO, we are passionate about making a difference. Join us in our mission to transform education and create opportunities for every child to succeed. Because when we invest in education, we invest in the future.

SSDO, ActionAid Works to Improve Education in Rural Communities

Research shows that over 90 million Nigerians live below the poverty line. A good percentage live in rural and marginalized communities. These communities are characterized by poor access to healthcare and education, lack of infrastructure, and low income levels. This affects their standard of living and quality of life, of which kids are the biggest victims.

Understanding this reality, South Saharan Social Development Organization, in partnership with ActionAid Nigeria through the Local Rights Programme, is doing its part to improve education in marginalized communities.

The program aims to reduce poverty by increasing its engagement with the poor and marginalized in selected communities through its Child Sponsorship mechanisms. The child sponsorship initiative identifies vulnerable children aged 3 to 8 years and attaches them to sponsors.

Over the past collection period, the team collected over 740 child messages across eight communities. Our motivation is to see the children and the communities at large be all that they can be. This activity allowed the team to keep tabs on the kids and monitor their development process. As well as get feedback from the kids to the sponsors.

7 Top Green Skills Can Learn and Monetize in 2023

The impact of climate change on the environment cannot be overemphasized. Women’s Peer Education Training

Through years of working on projects at the community level, we realize that women and girls are hugely disadvantaged. They have often been marginalized and segregated to the background on so many fronts in society.

One of the primary reasons for marginalization is the inequality between men and women in accessing and controlling resources.

And as such South Saharan Social Development Organization, in partnership with ActionAid Nigeria, seeks to foster women’s empowerment through peer education. This initiative aims to advocate for women’s rights and bridge women’s capacity deficiency at the community level.

The program was facilitated by the Project’s Lead, Perpetual Njoku, SSDO’s Gender Officer, Blessing Uchendu, and SSDO’s Good Governance Lead, Nkem Awachie. The training was executed using the Women Peer Education Resource Kit.

It covered essential areas such as personal development, hygiene, livelihood, nutrition, and inclusion. The women were taught how to mobilize and organize for collective actions, rights and responsibilities, family and community relationships, and well-being.

SSDO, ActionAid Provides Thirty Four-Seater Desks to Three Primary School

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela

Marginalized communities are often characterized by a higher prevalence of poverty, lack of infrastructure, and low access to healthcare and education, of which the biggest victims are children. This affects their standard of living and quality of life. There has to be a deliberate focus to improve access to health and education for such communities to improve development.

Often, children in these communities don’t have access to quality educational facilities. Putting them at a disadvantage when compared to their peers in urban areas. The lack of amenities like potable water and functional health centers also impact on their ability to learn and be productive in class.

Understanding this need, South Saharan Social Development Organization, in partnership with ActionAid Nigeria through the Local Rights Programme, is doing its part to improve education in marginalized communities. The project provided ten 4-seater desks each for Divine Favour Nursery and Primary School Abor Isiala Community in Isi Uzo LGA, Community Primary School, Oduma Achara, Ani-nri LGA and Community primary school Nkume Community, Uzo Uwani LGA.

In a ceremony on the school premises on Friday, 30th of September 2022, the headmistress of Community Primary School expressed her gratitude by thanking the organizations for their effort. “You can see the joy and the way the kids danced. That says it all. We’re grateful to SSDO and ActionAid for this timely intervention.”

Stakeholders present include School Based Management Committee Chairman, Mr. Ovili, LGA Councilor, Mr. Amos Orji, SSDO’s Head of Programs, Udochukwu Egwim, SSDO’s LRP Project Lead, Perpetual Njoku, Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) chairpersons, teachers, and community representative of the schools amongst others.

SSDO’s Head of programs, Udochukwu Egwim, stated that the importance of education cannot be overemphasized. “We as an organization will do our best to ensure that kids are in school and a lack of facilities would not be a stumbling block to their learning development.”

Through its child sponsorship mechanism, the project aims to reduce poverty by engaging with the poor and marginalized in selected communities.
