In commemoration of International Day of the Girl Child 2024, South Saharan Social Development Organization (SSDO), in partnership with ActionAid Nigeria, held an impactful seminar at Modern Ideal College, Abakpa, Enugu, under the theme “Girls’ Vision for the Future.” This inspiring event provided young girls with the opportunity to learn from accomplished women and empowered them to dream big, overcome barriers, and map out their aspirations.

Addressing Global and Local Challenges Facing Girls

The theme of this year’s International Day of the Girl Child, “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” underscores the pressing need to address barriers girls face worldwide. According to UNICEF, over 129 million girls are out of school globally—a statistic that starkly highlights the gender disparity in education access. Around the world, young girls continue to experience early marriage, gender-based violence, and economic constraints, all of which stifle their growth and prevent them from reaching their full potential.

In Nigeria, these challenges are particularly pronounced. With one of the highest rates of out-of-school children, Nigerian girls face unique challenges tied to cultural norms, economic hardship, and security risks. For many girls, pursuing education or career ambitions can seem like an impossible dream. This context made SSDO and ActionAid Nigeria’s event all the more crucial. 

Empowering Girls Through Role Models and Education

Understanding the weight of these issues, SSDO and ActionAid Nigeria organized a seminar at Modern Ideal College to inspire young girls to dream beyond societal limitations. The seminar featured successful women from diverse professions who shared their journeys, challenges, and triumphs, giving the students real-life examples of how hard work, resilience, and ambition can overcome obstacles. 

By meeting these female role models, the students were exposed to a range of career possibilities and were encouraged to see themselves in similar roles in the future. Agriculture is at the heart of Nigeria’s economy, especially in regions like Enugu State, where a significant portion of the population depends on farming for their livelihoods. Recognizing this, the South Saharan Social Development Organization (SSDO), led by its Executive Director, Dr. Stanley Ilechukwu, paid a courtesy visit to the Enugu State Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Patrick Ubru.

On the 18th of September 2024, the South Saharan Social Development Organization (SSDO), in collaboration with ActionAid Nigeria, organized a pivotal Stakeholder Engagement on the Enugu State 2024 Local Government Area (LGA) Elections. This crucial event was aimed at fostering dialogue, collaboration, and peace ahead of the elections, bringing together an array of key stakeholders from political parties, security agencies, media, and various government bodies.

The stakeholder engagement created a platform for productive discussions on ensuring peaceful and credible elections while emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding democratic processes.

A Historic Signing of the Peace Accord

One of the highlights of the event was the signing of a **peace accord** by representatives of various political parties, a historic first for Enugu State’s local government elections. This symbolic act underscores the commitment of all parties involved to uphold peace, eschew violence, and respect the rule of law throughout the election process. 

The peace accord is a significant step toward reducing electoral violence and ensuring that elections are conducted fairly, without intimidation or threats to the voting public. 

Security Assurance from the Enugu State Police

During the engagement, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, took center stage, reassuring citizens of the Nigerian Police Force’s preparedness to protect voters and ensure peace before, during, and after the elections. He emphasized that the police force is committed to providing a secure environment where citizens can freely exercise their democratic rights without fear of disruption or harm. 

CP Uzuegbu’s address highlighted the readiness of security outfits to deploy strategies to maintain law and order, prevent violence, and protect all election participants, including candidates, election workers, and voters.

ENSIEC’s Commitment to Transparency and Fairness

Professor Christian Ngwu, Chairman of the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC), delivered a keynote address focusing on the commission’s preparedness for the upcoming elections. Prof. Ngwu assured participants that ENSIEC is fully committed to conducting elections that are not only credible but also transparent and inclusive. His speech reiterated the commission’s dedication to improving the electoral process and ensuring that every vote counts.

With an emphasis on fairness, he outlined the various measures ENSIEC has put in place to ensure free and fair elections, including voter education initiatives, training for election officials, and ensuring the integrity of the electoral process from start to finish.

Collaborative Support from Traditional and Political Stakeholders

The event saw robust participation from critical stakeholders such as the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and traditional rulers across the local government areas of Enugu State. These key figures are instrumental in promoting peaceful elections by leveraging their influence within local communities to encourage unity and adherence to the law.

Their presence at the event reinforced the message that the forthcoming elections are not just a responsibility of political candidates but a collective effort requiring the support and collaboration of all facets of society. The event, which took place on the 16th and 17th of September 2024 at Jubilee Hall, Holy Ghost Cathedral, Enugu, saw the active participation of citizens eager to play their part in ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections.

Why Election Observers Matter

Election observers are crucial in upholding the integrity of electoral processes. Their role is to monitor activities on election day, ensure adherence to electoral laws, and report any irregularities such as voter suppression, violence, or malpractices. By observing and documenting these issues, they help promote accountability and transparency in democratic governance.

Key Objectives of the Training

The 2-day intensive training equipped participants with the knowledge and skills required for effective election observation. Topics covered included:

– Electoral processes and best practices

– Monitoring and reporting electoral violence and malpractice

– Voter rights and participation

– Accurate reporting procedures for election observations

The sessions were designed to ensure that participants could confidently engage in the electoral process and contribute towards free and fair elections in the state. 

Introducing ActionAid Nigeria’s I-Observers App

One of the key highlights of the training was introducing participants to ActionAid Nigeria’s I-Observers App, a cutting-edge tool designed for seamless data gathering during elections. Participants were trained on how to effectively use the app, which includes built-in checklists and procedures for monitoring elections. This tool allows for real-time data submission, ensuring swift and accurate reporting from observers on the ground. The app is part of an innovative approach to election monitoring, providing a digital solution to efficiently collect, manage, and share data, making it easier to track issues as they unfold.

Interactive Learning and Engagement

The training was not limited to lectures; participants actively engaged in hands-on exercises, group discussions, and case studies. They practiced skills in monitoring electoral violence, identifying malpractices, and ensuring that voters’ rights are upheld throughout the electoral process. Participants were also encouraged to share insights and best practices from their own communities, fostering a collaborative learning environment.

The interactive format ensured that each observer was not only theoretically prepared but also practically equipped to handle real-world election monitoring scenarios. Group work and role-playing activities helped solidify participants’ understanding of how to manage different election day challenges, including managing conflict situations, coordinating with law enforcement, and reporting irregularities.

The youth in Enugu State, who constitute about 60% of the population, face significant challenges ranging from unemployment to limited access to quality education and healthcare. These issues, if left unaddressed, threaten not only the personal development of the youth but also the socio-economic growth of the state as a whole. To harness the full potential of Enugu’s youth and ensure they are equipped to contribute meaningfully to the state’s development, there is an urgent need for a comprehensive and inclusive youth policy. This policy must be tailored to the specific needs and aspirations of the youth, taking into account their unique challenges and opportunities.

Recognizing this need, South Saharan Social Development Organization (SSDO), in collaboration with the Enugu State Ministry of Youth and Sports and ActionAid Nigeria, organized a critical Stakeholder Engagement on the Enugu State Youth Policy. This event was a crucial step in the broader process of developing a youth policy that is both inclusive and context-specific. By facilitating this engagement, SSDO and its partners are ensuring that the voices of the youth and other key stakeholders are heard and integrated into the policy development process.

The Stakeholder Engagement brought together a diverse group of participants, including youths from the 17 LGAs in the state, state representatives of the National Youth Council, persons with disabilities, youths in civil society organizations among others to ensure inclusion and a well-rounded policy that speaks to the need of the youths of Enugu State. 

The event was graced by the presence of the Honorable Commissioner for Youths & Sports, Barr. Lloyd Ike Ekweremadu Jr., who provided the opening remarks. In his speech, Barr. Ekweremadu emphasized the importance of creating a youth policy that not only addresses the immediate challenges faced by the youth but also lays the foundation for their long-term empowerment and development. He underscored the government’s commitment to working with all stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the policy.

The primary aim of the engagement was to gather inputs from various stakeholders to shape a youth policy that reflects the aspirations and needs of the youth in Enugu State. The event provided a platform for participants to engage in meaningful discussions, share their experiences, and propose practical solutions to the challenges faced by the youth. Wilfred Okeke, a consultant on the policy and convener of the Vibrant Generation Leadership Initiative, facilitated the key session on integrating youth perspectives into the policy. His session provided valuable insights into how the policy can be designed to be more responsive to the needs of the youth.

The agenda of the event was carefully structured to ensure maximum participation and impact. Following the keynote session, participants were divided into breakout groups to discuss specific aspects of the youth policy. These group discussions were followed by a plenary session where the findings and recommendations from each group were presented. The discussions covered a wide range of topics, including education, employment, health, and governance, all of which are critical to the well-being and development of the youth.

The Stakeholder Engagement on the Enugu State Youth Policy marks a significant milestone in the journey towards creating a youth policy that is truly reflective of the needs and aspirations of the youth in Enugu State. SSDO and its partners are committed to continuing this collaborative process and ensuring that the policy is not only developed but also effectively implemented to bring about positive change for the youth.
