Local Rights Programme

ActionAid’s Local Rights Program is committed to working in community development institute

(January 2021 – Current)

Introduction

Research from the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics shows that 63 percent of Nigerians are multi-dimensionally poor, approximately 113 million people for context. Understanding this context, South Saharan Social Development Organization, in partnership with ActionAid Nigeria, is implementing the Local Rights Programme (LRP) in Enugu State.

The Local Rights programme is an initiative that aims to reduce poverty by engaging with the poor and marginalized in selected communities through its child sponsorship mechanisms. The project began in 2021 and works towards giving power to people in the most vulnerable and hard-to-reach communities by empowering them with essential skills and capacities to make demands by engaging political and institutional power structures in their communities and the state using the Human Rights Based Approach to programming. The project is currently being implemented across three LGAs in Enugu State.

Project objectives

To improve the socioeconomic status of women, men, and children by mobilizing communities and building their capacity to implement people-centred development programmes using the human rights-based approach to programming. This is done through a three-pronged approach, empowering the grassroots community through rights consciousness and supporting locally initiated projects, capacity building of local institutions and supporting policy and advocacy initiatives that ensure that the voices of people living in poverty are heard and their rights respected.
