Strengthening Community Response Project

Empowering Rural Health, Training TBAs for Better Maternal and Neonatal Outcomes in Enugu State

(November 2014 - October 2015 )

Introduction

The “Strengthening Community Response to PMTCT & SRH in Rural Communities in Enugu State” project aimed to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes through the training of Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) in 10 rural communities. This initiative was critical in addressing gaps in healthcare services, especially in maternal and neonatal child health (MNCH), Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV, and Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH).

Project objectives

  • Enhance MNCH Services:* To equip 300 Traditional Birth Attendants with advanced skills and knowledge in maternal and neonatal child health.
  • Promote PMTCT:* To reduce the rate of mother-to-child transmission of HIV through comprehensive education and practical training.
  • Improve SRH Knowledge:* To increase awareness and understanding of sexual and reproductive health among TBAs, enabling them to provide better guidance and support within their communities.

Project Outcome

300
