SSDO, ActionAid Empowers Farmers Through Agroecology Training 

The impact of climate change has never been more evident, especially on agriculture in Nigeria. Erratic rainfall, flooding of farmlands, rising temperature, and soil degradation reduce farmers’ output and increase food insecurity. However, Agroecology has been recognized as an essential solution to Nigeria’s food security and sustainability challenges. It offers numerous advantages in addressing environmental degradation and population growth.

Understanding this challenge, South Saharan Social Development Organization, in partnership with ActionAid Nigeria, organized a 3-day Agroecology training and established model farms under the Strategic Partnership Agreement Programme in three communities in Enugu state: Oduma Achara in Aninri LGA, Ihenyi in Isi Uzo LGA, and Umuogili in Igbo Eze North LGA.

The Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA II), a groundbreaking four-year initiative funded by the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), is making significant strides in promoting basic human rights, democratic values, and sustainable livelihoods for young individuals, particularly marginalized young women, within disaster-prone and protracted crisis areas in Nigeria. 

By preserving soil health, reducing erosion, and minimizing reliance on synthetic inputs, this holistic approach promotes sustainable agriculture. The integration of agroecology practices enhances food security by increasing productivity and profitability, while simultaneously reducing the dependence on costly external resources. Additionally, it elevates rural livelihoods by bolstering incomes, improving living standards, stimulating economic growth, and alleviating poverty.

The training conducted enabled farmers to embrace sustainable practices, decrease reliance on harmful inputs, augment yields, and ultimately improve their incomes. This, in turn, paves the way for enhanced food security, improved rural livelihoods, and a more sustainable future for farming in the community.

The training was facilitated by Mr. Theophilus Ivoh and Dr. Agah Celestine from the Ministry of Agriculture, and It covered topics such as soil conservation, sustainable water management, reduction in the use of agrochemicals and composting, pest control, multiple cropping, rotation, and intercropping.

In a truly participatory approach, the community donated four plots of land and received 207 improved palm seedling for their model and personal farms. This would help improve the socioeconomic status of the households and communities. It will also help communities become more resilient to climate change through afforestation and improved seedlings.

The participants expressed their heartfelt gratitude to ActionAid Nigeria and SSDO for their commendable efforts in implementing this transformative project. They recognized the immense value of the training received and acknowledged the positive impact it will have on their farming practices and overall livelihoods.

The success of the agroecology workshop signifies a significant step forward in achieving the goals outlined in the Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA II). As ActionAid Nigeria and SSDO continue to collaborate and empower marginalized communities, it is expected that their unwavering commitment to sustainable agriculture and livelihood improvement will yield lasting positive change for Nigeria’s farming sector and its resilient farmers.

SSDO, ActionAid Organize Budget Tracking and Monitoring Training

South Saharan Social Development Organization, in partnership with ActionAid Nigeria, organized a 2-day capacity building on Budget monitoring and tracking under the Strategic Partnership Agreement Phase II project in Enugu State.

This training equipped participants with the relevant knowledge needed to follow budget proceedings in a more proactive rather than a reactive manner. Youths were empowered on the best approaches for evidence-based advocacy and community engagement at various levels.

The training was facilitated by ActionAid’s Governance Manager, Celestine Odo, Youth Development and Governance Expert, Nebo Collins, and Public Affairs Analyst, Wilfred Okeke. It covered topics such as public budget and budget process, identifying youth-focused expenditures, budget advocacy and strategy, budget analysis, and skills among others.

Participants were engaged using a combination of lectures, interactive sessions, and group discussions. They also developed fact sheets and policy briefs, which will be used to drive advocacy campaigns subsequently.

ActionAid, SSDO Organizes a Sensitization Rally on Climate Change

Nigeria’s climate has been changing: temperature increases; variable rainfall; rise in sea level and flooding; drought and desertification; land degradation; more frequent extreme weather events; affected freshwater resources, and loss of biodiversity. The durations and intensities of rainfall have increased, producing large runoffs and flooding in many places in Nigeria. 

Rainfall variation is projected to continue to increase. Precipitation in southern areas is expected to rise, and rising sea levels are expected to exacerbate flooding and submersion of coastal lands. Droughts have also become a constant in Nigeria and are expected to continue in Northern Nigeria, arising from a decline in precipitation and rise in temperature. Lake Chad and other lakes in the country are drying up and at risk of disappearing.

Floods are a recurring natural hazard in Nigeria and have become more frequent throughout the country in recent decades. Agriculture, health, infrastructure, the economy, and trade are all negatively impacted, as evidenced in 2012 when severe floods contributed to reduced economic growth in agriculture and trade. This is coupled with the trigger of the Lagba Dam in Cameroon which has drastically increased the level of flooding in the country affecting over ten states.

Increased flooding due to rising sea levels will negatively impact agriculture, the economy, coastal infrastructure, human health, coastal ecosystems, and human settlements. Sea levels have been rising along the coast of Nigeria, causing coastal erosion and some villages to be lost. It has been estimated that a 1-meter rise in sea level could cause 75% of the land in the Niger Delta to be lost.

Over the past few weeks, different states have felt the sting of the floods. In as much as the government has a role, we also have a part to play to ensure the earth is habitable and safe. The effect of human activities has a telling effect on the atmosphere. And nobody is exempted from these devastating effects. Hence, the need for sensitization to raise awareness about climate change. 

Understanding these effects, ActionAid Nigeria, in partnership with South Saharan Social Development Organization, is playing its part in creating awareness and sensitizing people on steps to take to combat climate change. The message was simple: “There is no planet B. Protect the environment today.” 

The rally also sensitized people on what they can do to protect the environment from their corner: 

– Cut down waste

– Conserve water

– Plant a tree

– Walk more

– Spread the word.

ActionAid, SSDO Organizes a Sensitization Rally on PVC Collection

The Nigerian general election comes up in the next five months. Voter registration is over, and citizens must pick up their permanent voter’s cards and exercise their franchises. Over time, data has shown that only a handful of registered voters come out to vote. In the 2019 presidential elections, only 37 percent of registered voters showed up on election day. 

We realize that there’s a lackluster attitude of citizens to casting their votes on d-day. Some have attributed this to election day violence, a lack of belief in the power of their vote making a difference, and others believe vote buying is such a big deal. While some say the level of corruption in the system is neck deep and their singular votes can’t make any difference. 

While there’s some iota of truth in their worries, it is paramount to understand that change starts from an individual. And ultimately, votes are what put people in power. The longer citizens shy away from exercising their constitutional rights, the longer mediocre leaders get to the corridors of power barely opposed. 

Understanding this, ActionAid Nigeria, in partnership with South Saharan Social Development Organization, organized a civic awareness and sensitization rally on PVC collection. The message for the rally was simple: “Your votes decide the future. Your PVC is your voice. Your vote is your power; use it wisely.” 

PVCs registered from June 2021 to January 15, 2022, are ready for collection. PVCs registered from January 16th to June 30th, 2022, will be ready for collection in October. The PVCs registered from July 2022 will be ready for collection in November.
