Project Background

Poor access to improved water and sanitation remains a major challenge in Nigeria, contributing to increased vulnerability to waterborne diseases, particularly among children under five. The situation is further worsened by inadequate sanitation practices, with a significant proportion of the population still practicing open defecation. The Water of Life (WOL) Project was developed to improve access to safe and sustainable water while contributing to better health, education, nutrition, and community well-being. However, poor maintenance and management of existing water facilities often threaten their sustainability. To address this challenge, the project supported the rehabilitation of water facilities and the establishment and training of functional WASH Committees responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance of the facilities. South Saharan Social Development Organization (SSDO) implemented the rehabilitation of the water facilities and trained community caretaker committees to ensure their continued functionality and sustainability.
