Project Background

The Strengthening Community Response to PMTCT & SRH in Rural Communities in Enugu State Project was designed to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes by strengthening the capacity of Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) across 10 rural communities. The project addressed critical gaps in access to and delivery of essential healthcare services, particularly in Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH), Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV, and Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH). Through targeted training and capacity-building for TBAs, the project sought to improve the quality of maternal and newborn care at the community level, promote early access to appropriate health services, and strengthen community-based responses to maternal and reproductive health challenges.

Project Objective

Promote PMTCT of HIV: To strengthen TBAs’ knowledge and practices on the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV, promoting early identification, appropriate referrals, and access to relevant prevention and treatment services.

Enhance MNCH Services: To equip 300 Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) with the knowledge, skills, and capacity required to provide improved maternal, newborn, and child health services within rural communities.

Improve SRH Knowledge: To increase TBAs’ knowledge and understanding of Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH), enabling them to provide accurate information, guidance, and appropriate referrals to women and families within their communities.

Provided TBAs with necessary medical supplies and educational materials to aid in their practice and outreach efforts.

Training Workshops

Conducted intensive training sessions for 300 Traditional Birth Attendants on MNCH, PMTCT, and SRH. These workshops were designed to improve their competency and effectiveness in delivering essential healthcare services.
