Project Background

Since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, voter apathy has remained a major challenge, particularly in rural communities. Factors such as poor infrastructure, low literacy levels, poverty, and limited access to electoral information often discourage rural residents from fully participating in the democratic process. This can result in the voices and interests of rural communities being underrepresented in governance and decision-making. To address this challenge, the South Saharan Social Development Organization (SSDO) launched Project 100 – Rural Election Drive, an initiative focused on increasing voter awareness and participation in rural communities. The project uses community sensitization, stakeholder engagement, radio messaging, and IEC materials to encourage PVC collection, voting, and active participation in the electoral process.

Project Objective

Strengthen Electoral Information Dissemination: Provide rural communities with accessible electoral information through radio jingles, IEC materials, and community-based sensitization activities.

Increase Voter Awareness and Participation: Educate and sensitize rural communities on the importance of voting and active participation in the electoral process.

Promote PVC Collection and Voter Turnout: Encourage eligible voters in sensitized communities to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and participate in elections.

Activities

Comprehensive programs designed to drive long-term change.

Distribution of IEC Materials

Distributed Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials, including flyers, to town criers to support effective information dissemination and reinforce key messages on getting your PVC, voting, and protecting your vote across communities.

Sensitization and Voter Education

Worked with LGA coordinators and town criers to sensitize community members on the importance of collecting their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and exercising their civic rights through voting.

Stakeholder Engagement

Engaged Local Government Area (LGA) coordinators as focal points to strengthen project coordination and facilitate wider outreach to communities across Enugu State.
