Project Background

Women in South-Eastern Nigeria face significant barriers in their quest for economic empowerment. Gender-discriminatory cultural practices, restrictive social norms, unpaid domestic labour, limited access to capital, and inadequate economic opportunities continue to affect women’s ability to improve their livelihoods and achieve financial independence. To address these challenges, the Development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC) partnered with the South Saharan Social Development Organization (SSDO) to establish the Partnership for Advancing Women in Economic Development (PAWED). The project strengthens women’s economic collectives by building their capacity, supporting evidence-based advocacy, and creating opportunities for engagement with government and other stakeholders. Through these efforts, PAWED seeks to amplify the voices of economically active women and girls, promote policies that support women’s economic empowerment, and improve their livelihoods and participation in economic development in Enugu State.

Project Objective

Increase Women’s Participation in Economic Development: Promote greater engagement of women and girls in economic decision-making and strengthen their access to resources, opportunities, and support for improved financial independence.

Strengthen Women’s Economic Collectives: Build the capacity of women’s economic groups to improve their livelihoods, access opportunities, and work collectively towards economic empowerment.

Promote Evidence-Based Advocacy: Generate and use evidence to advocate for policies and programmes that address the economic challenges faced by women and girls.

Strengthening Women’s Economic Collectives

Supported women and girls through the PAWED project to build stronger economic collectives, promote evidence-based advocacy, and improve livelihoods and economic opportunities for economically active women and girls in Enugu State.

Advocacy and Training Sessions

Organized advocacy and training sessions that provided platforms for discussions, capacity building, and development of key recommendations to advance women’s economic empowerment.

Advocacy Visits to Government Agencies

Conducted advocacy visits to relevant government agencies to strengthen women’s economic collectives and promote policies that support women’s economic development in Enugu State.
