Project Background

Over the years, South Saharan Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited (SSMCL) has been embarking on activities that helps improve the standards of living of the less privilege, poor widows, orphans, women and youth in general, as a way of eradicating poverty, low standards of living and contributing to a better living standard for the people, at the community level. Jacob’s Well is a micro-credit initiative powered by social trust and specifically designed to support women. Introduced as a complementary service to the Sister Guardian Initiative (SGI), the scheme recognizes that economic vulnerability is a major driver of women’s marginalization and exposure to violence. Targeted at victims of Violence Against Women (VAW) and women at risk, Jacob’s Well operates within communities that have active SGI chapters. The initiative provides access to micro-credit facilities and financial literacy training, enabling women to build sustainable livelihoods, achieve financial independence, and reduce poverty. Loans are distributed through Women Economic Collectives (WECs)—community-based groups that promote collective responsibility, support peer monitoring, and enhance financial inclusion.
