Project Background

The Hygiene Scale-Up Promotion Project was implemented as an emergency public health response to curb the spread of COVID-19 and other hygiene-related diseases, particularly among vulnerable and underserved communities in Nigeria. The outbreak of COVID-19 exposed significant gaps in hygiene awareness, access to handwashing facilities, and the adoption of preventive health practices across many communities. Poor sanitation, inadequate hygiene infrastructure, misinformation, and low public awareness increased the risk of disease transmission, especially in densely populated and low-resource settings. The project was designed to support the ongoing efforts of State Governments to control the spread of coronavirus disease and strengthen community resilience through large-scale hygiene promotion and behavioural change interventions. The project specifically targeted community members, school children, teachers, healthcare workers, women, youths, traders, and other vulnerable groups in selected communities, with a focus on those with limited access to hygiene facilities and accurate health information.

Project Objective

Promotion of Hygiene Behaviour Change Messaging to increase awareness and encourage the adoption of proper hygiene practices among individuals and communities.
Installation of Handwashing Facilities in Public Places to improve access to handwashing facilities and promote regular handwashing as a key measure for preventing the spread of diseases.
Advocacy for Prioritization of WASH to encourage government, stakeholders, and communities to strengthen support and investment in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene interventions.
