Introduction
Sanitation is a basic human right essential for health, education, gender equality, and economic development. Yet, many African countries still lack access to basic sanitation services. The African Sanitation Policy Guidelines (ASPG), funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and implemented by organizations like WaterAid Nigeria, offer a framework to address this gap.
ASPG supports African countries in developing inclusive, context-specific sanitation policies based on best practices. It emphasizes a human rights-based approach, focusing on equity, inclusion, and sustainability through appropriate technologies and effective management. The project collaborates with governments, civil society, and the private sector to ensure policies are comprehensive and impactful.
