Save the Vulture Species
On 5th September 2019, South Saharan Social Development Organization collaborated with Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) to commemorate the International Vulture Awareness Day (IVAD) 2019. The theme of this event was “Protect Nature’s Sanitary Officer; Save the Vulture Species, Save the Egyptian Vulture”. This event was timely as it responded to an incident in Ihe community, Enugu State where it was reported that vultures at the Eke-Ihe market had been poisoned and killed en masse by vulture poachers.
The highlight of the event was a lecture delivered by Dr. Paddy Ezeala, a renowned conservationist on the topic “Vultures in Nigeria, imperative of a better image and protection”. In attendance were traditional rulers from several communities in Enugu State, students of higher institutions, butchers, market union executives and other members of the public. In addition, SSDO coordinated a sensitization rally at the New Artisan Market abattoir to enlighten the butchers on the role of vultures in sanitizing their environment and their importance in curbing the spread of bacteria from dead animals.
