EBONYI STATE PRE-ELECTION DIALOGUE
Due to the prevalence of electoral mal-practice in Nigeria, vote trading, rigging, thuggery and ballot box snatching has become the trend. As a result of this, the Nigerian electoral process has been slayed and citizens have lost faith in the system.
To address this malfunctioning of the electoral process, the South Saharan Social Development Organization, in partnership with National Orientation Agency and Independent National Electoral Commission organized a three-day voter education and sensitization dialogue for representatives of Youths, Women and Traditional and Religious leaders groups. This event which took place on 4th, 5thand 6thDecember respectively had the theme “Towards Credible Election in 2019”.
While speaking at the event, the Ebonyi State NOA director, Dr Emmanuel Abah stated that there is need to understand the essence of voting. He pointed out the fact that voting for the right candidates will ensure the protection of interests. He went further to say that Nigeria’s election is characterized by vote trading, snatching of ballot boxes, and all other forms of electoral malpractices that are violent in nature and advocated for the people to not sell their votes but rather use their votes to make the right choice. He also mentioned the need for voters to wait for results to be announced before leaving the polling units.
The event also featured a road walk around the city of Abakiliki sensitizing the public on the need to vote and not sell their votes.
