A 2016 Education Sector Support Programme in Nigeria (ESSPIN) monitoring report indicated that only 12% of teachers in public schools practice participatory teaching methods. Also, a toolkit for secondary education teachers developed by Indiana University Bloomington in December 2015 shows that participatory teaching methods lead to improved learning both academically and socially. This helps the students acquire skills such as creativity, flexibility and the ability to think independently and critically. It is in this context that SSDO implemented Improved Learning Outcome Project (ILOP) funded by TY Danjuma Foundation. This project seeked to improve the learning outcome of pupils in Enugu State through improved capacity of teachers and community involvement in schools’ management within one year.

Through this project which was implemented in collaboration with the Enugu State Ministry of Education through the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB), teachers and SBMC members in six selected local government areas were trained on modern teaching strategies and best management strategies respectively.

During the launch of the project in Enugu, the Executive Director of the organization, Mrs. Nkechi Igwe, made a disclosure in an interview in Enugu. She said the project was to improve learning outcome of pupils in Enugu by equipping primary school teachers with modern techniques of teaching as well as encourage involvement of communities in schools’ management. She further said that the training would cut across the three senatorial districts of Enugu East with focus on Enugu East and North Local Government Areas, Enugu North Senatorial Zone comprising Igbo-Etiti and Nsukka local government areas and Enugu West Senatorial Zone focusing onAwgu and Aninrilocal government areas. The Commissioner for Education who also present during the launch commended SSDO for the project and gave an assurance that the state ministry of education will gave its full support for a successful implementation of the project in the state.

The training of teachers and capacity building workshop for SBMC members are was carried out in six selected local government areas.
